Lichtenberg: Möllendorffstraße
TCHOBAN VOSS Architekten GmbH and ST raum a. GmbH
Climate-friendly Spatial Transformation
On the south side of Möllendorffstrasse is a plaque with a depiction of the historic village centre of Lichtenberg as it was in the 18th century. It shows a dense, harmonious, urban space with timber-framed houses. This has become the leitmotif for our ecologically and socially conscious extension to the urban landscape. Nothing will be demolished to make way for our proposal. Existing, undesirable gaps will be filled with social uses and urgently needed living space constructed using sustainable timber hybrid construction. The streets will be lined with beautiful green public space. A roadside development will be created in front of the discount store parking lot. The roof of each tram stop will be clad with photovoltaic panels: combining weather protection with ecological energy generation. The waiting areas at the stops will have cafés and kiosks. The three lanes dedicated to car traffic will become two, a new cycle path will replace the car parking lane and there will be plenty of space for pedestrians.
The existing street space
As with everywhere in Berlin, many layers of the city’s history sit alongside each other on Möllendorffstrasse: the old parish church is located on Loeperplatz, with a small monument in front of it. To the east at Roederplatz, an undefined triangular space remains. Along the wide streets, such as at the Möllendorffstrasse/Storkower Strasse tram stop between the squares, there are residential buildings from different eras. There is a universal lack of effective public ground floor areas with an appealing offering.
Drafts of the site plan with sketches
The site plan and the sketches drawn by Sergei Tchoban show an increased amount of civic amenities along Möllendorffstrasse. It shows: the integration of the new residential buildings into the existing buildings (1), the new placement of the parking lot (2), a new square in front of the Shostakovich Music School (3), the new setting with residential buildings at the level of the meeting place “Das bunte Haus” [The colourful house] (4), and the new urban edge in front of the supermarket on the corner of Herzbergstrasse (5).
