»Upend the status quo!«
Dr.-Ing. Friedemann Kunst, Chairman of the Landesgruppe Berlin der Deutschen Akademie für Städtebau und Landesplanung
»Berlin can only continue to support a high quality of life if we make sweeping changes to the city, and soon.
The city requires new plant life and additional drainage in densely built-up areas in order to cope with rising temperatures, drought and heavy rainfall. Public space must be redistributed, and traffic must be more efficiently organised.
The large roads of the future will see an inversion of the current distribution of space: two thirds of the street will be available for buses, bicycles and pedestrians. By utilising technology and better organisation, car traffic can be reduced by two thirds at the very least, whilst maintaining the same level of mobility. This will free up space for trees, shade, and quiet oases in the city. Neighbourhoods will be quieter and cleaner, the streets will have better public services, and become more attractive for residents.«
