The relevance of the urban

Kollhoff and Ingenhoven: summit meeting on the architecture of the city and its streets

Gipfel

The prevailing opinion is that the city needs to reinvent itself. It should become greener to make life in a changing climate more bearable. It should become more compact in order to reduce land consumption. And it should become more beautiful in order to remain attractive for residents.

Essentially, it boils down to the question of what makes a city a city today. What should a contemporary and at the same time sustainable design of public space look like? What architecture creates an urban atmosphere? What kind of urban design do we need in order to live well together in a small space?

Hans Kollhoff and Christoph Ingenhoven discussed these questions. They are among the most important German architects, and their buildings and contributions to the debate have significantly shaped the architectural discourse in this country. As they pursue very different approaches, the discussion was all the more interesting.
