Build new or preserve?
Berlin and its bridges
Bridge and road construction in the context of transport transition and climate protection
There are 1,100 bridges in Berlin that characterise the cityscape of the metropolis and organise and connect traffic on land, water and rail. The state is responsible for 835 bridges, many of which, as in many German cities, need to be repaired or rebuilt due to their dilapidated condition and increased traffic loads.
The Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment currently has 60 bridge projects to be realised, fifteen of them in the Treptow-Köpenick district alone.
The symposium will provide an overview of planned bridge projects and those currently under construction: Is there also a threat of collapses in Berlin, as was the case with the Carola Bridge in Dresden? How can tomorrow's bridges be planned and built flexibly and in a way that is suitable for transport utilisation? And how can they be more sustainable, more beautiful and faster?
