»A historical picture has illustrated what, to me, is the ideal division of space in a Berlin highway.

This postcard depicts Martin-Luther-Strasse in Schöneberg, at the turn of the century before last. A 2.5 metre wide bike lane is to be added to on each side next to the curb, so that only the middle of today’s three-lane carriageway is reserved for motor traffic.

The wide central reservation can mimic the style of Unter den Linden. The tram shelters are shaded under a line of trees. Several pedestrian crossings must be added to provide access to the central reservation, in addition to those at traffic lights.

If the trees are well maintained and the number of polluting cars and fossil-fuelled heating systems are massively reduced, then this street space can have a positive influence on the urban climate.«
